When it comes to tuning, keeping your engine within the window of safety is important, even for mild modifications. The window of safety shrinks quickly as the horsepower increases, for instance, the window of safety shrinks when you use high compression pistons or boost. Many tuners can stay withing the window while tuning, but they don’t check that all sensors are calibrated, and some tuners don’t even care if a sensor isn’t working. So, as soon as weather conditions change from the time of your tune, you may be heading for disaster. If the sensors are off by a little, the tune could be slowly damaging your motor. Rings are the first to get fried, leading to blow-by and excessive oil consumption. Even if you notice the blow-by before the motor is heavily damaged, you’re still looking at an engine rebuild to change out the fried rings.
